Planning the Perfect Kitchen
Planning or re-doing the kitchen can be a daunting thought but it needn’t be if the right precautions are taken and plans put in place. Most kitchen companies will offer a free planning and visual service which will leave you with a computer generated image – this must be taken advantage of.

Sticking to the budget
Dependent on what you are hoping to achieve, you should always leave room for manoeuvre on the budget front. Always be aware that structural changes will eat into your budget but don’t be afraid of this as a slight re-shuffle could make the world of difference. Bear in mind that fitting costs for the average kitchen will be around £1,500.
Where to start…
I’m sure if you asked a handful of people this question the most popular answer would be by choosing the colour but thinking more practically will ensure that your kitchen works in the long term so you must begin by deciding what works in your space.
A trip to Pure Design is a must for those seeking the ultimate luxurious design led kitchens, and an array of ideas of how best to use space. SieMatic is a personal favourite of mine so keep your eyes peeled.
Space & Storage
First and foremost decide where you want to sit and eat in your kitchen and work round this. The main work area should face the seating area and storage options should be plentiful. In city centre flats, open plan living is often the norm so ensure that you take full advantage of this space; curved units will help the kitchen and dining areas flow into one to create a more relaxed space.
Floors & Lighting
Larger tiles will make a smaller kitchen look much bigger – with this in mind always go for durability. My favourites are travertine, limestone and black marble. Lighting wise, steer clear from highly decorative fixtures as they will collect grease and grime, instead opt for recessed or semi-recessed fittings, under cabinet lighting or wall lighting to create an atmospheric ambient glow.
The finishing touches
Whoever said that we were a sucker for big brands hit the nail on the head. Brand name appliances will make a property much more attractive for resale and add a luxurious air to the kitchen. Brand names don’t have to break the bank though, shop around online to see what deals there are to be had. To increase the quality feel of your kitchen, go for granite or marble work tops – and listen out for that chiming sound when you place a wine glass on them!
Last but not least clever storage options are key and the options are endless… spice drawers, pull out larders, and tall cupboards (ideal for hiding the ironing board!) all maximise space and minimise stress so sit back, relax and enjoy your kitchen.
